One of the greatest masterpieces by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini is going to be performed at two major theatres in Rome: the Opera House, from Tuesday the 18th, to Friday the 28th of May, and the Teatro Flaiano, from Tuesday the 21st of May to Tuesday the 11th of June.

This vibrant and touching opera is a finest combination of music and drama, and it has been rated among the best operas of all the times. Puccini wrote the first version in 1904, and made several changes in the following years, until a final version was completed in 1907.

Rome Guide: Trastevere

lunedì, aprile 19th, 2010

Trastevere is a district in Rome situated on the west bank of the Tiber and south of the Vatican. Its distinctive aspect of a maze of narrow alleys makes it a very popular and appreciated area. In fact, its streets are made of the typical cobblestones, called sampietrini, which are being paved elsewhere in Rome, and now only remain in Trastevere.

The area hosts the John Cabot University, the American Academy in Rome and the Pratt Insitute, and that’s why it has a large population of American college students and expatriates.

Santa Maria in Trastevere and Santa Cecilia, located in the homonym squares, are among the most ancient churches in Rome, as well as beautiful sites you can’t really miss visiting when in Trastevere. The squares are the kind of place you enjoy just hanging around and watching people passing by, in day-time as much as at night. In fact, Trastevere is one of the most famed districts for nigth life in Rome, being rich in clubs, restaurants, cafés and pubs and it is mainly frequented by young people.

Another interesting site is the Isola Tiberina, a splendid little island, the only one in the Tiber river, that separates central Rome and Trastevere. Within the Isola there are an hospital, called Fatebenefratelli, a synagogue, and a restaurant. In summer, the Isola also hosts a film festival, many different stalls selling any kind of goods, and stands where you can buy a drink.

Finally, in the Trastevere district, there is the Janiculum hill, which offers a superb panoramic view of Rome, maybe the best in the city. Last but not least, there are many luxury apartments for rent in Trastevere wich could be the perfect solution for your holiday in Rome.

Thousands protest against Silvio Berlusconi

Protest against Berlusconi

Protest against Berlusconi

Many thousands of Italians have been taking part in a protest in Rome against the government of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The demonstrators, called out by the opposition, accused him of changing laws for his own benefit.

The protest organisers also called for employment, education and health to be at the centre of campaigning for this month’s regional elections.

A recent opinion poll showed only low levels of support for Mr Berlusconi. His People of Freedom party has seen its preparations for the regional elections on 28 and 29 March marred by problems over electoral lists. Italy’s top administrative court, the State Council, refused on Saturday to reinstate the ruling coalition’s candidates for the Lazio region, which includes Rome.

The government had passed an emergency decree to ensure its list was included, despite a People of Freedom official missing a deadline to submit the required documents to local electoral officials.

Mr Berlusconi has said the list was excluded as an attempt to damage his party, and that he only acts in the interests of Italian democracy.
