Relatively close to the Roman Forum (Foro Romano), the Imperial Fora stand in all their majesty between the Colosseum and Venice Square (Piazza Venezia), in the very heart of Rome. The Imperial Fora consist in a number of monumental Fora, or public squares, that once were the political, religious, economic hub of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire.

Julius Caesar was the first who decided to build a forum bearing his name. Opened in 46 BC, the Forum of Caesar was conceived as an extension to the already existing Roman Forum and had also the purpose of celebrating Caesar’s power, as it can be seen with the statue of Caesar riding Bucephalus, the horse of Alexander the Great, that symbolise absolute force. Within the Forum of Caesar it was also placed a temple devoted to Venus Genitrix, since Ceasar’s family maintained to discend from Venus.

In 2 BC, it was built the Forum of Augustus, the second monumental square of the Imperial Fora. Augustus and Mark Antony had defeated the forces of Brutus and Cassius in 42 BC, this way avenging the death of Ceasar, and in order to celebrate this memorable event, they ordered the construction of the Forum of Augusts, with the impressive Temple of Mars Ultor symbolising Rome’s discent from the god Mars.

The Forum of Vespasian was built in 75 AD, during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. Actually, since it had no civil function, it cannot be considered a proper forum, so it is often referred to as simply the Temple of Peace. The Forum of Vespasian was built to celebrate the conquest of Jerusalem.

Domitian decided to unify the Forum of Caesar, the Forum of Augustus and the Temple of the Peace. He therefore ordered the building of a Forum in the free area between these complex, but construction work only terminated after his death, so the new monumental area took the name of his successor: the Forum of Nerva, also called Transitional Forum since it worked as an access way.
The last Forum was also the biggest and greatest of all the Imperial Fora. In 113 AD, on the occasion of the conquest of Dacia, it was built the Trajan Forum. The most notable monument in it is the Basilica Ulpia, in front of which stands and a large equestrian sculpture of the Emperor. The Trajan Forum also included the famous Trajan’s market.

CHRISTMAS FESTIVITY – A BIT OF HISTORY
Christmas festivities in Rome generally begins with the feast of the Immaculate conception, a holy day that falls on the 8th of December and celebrates the conception of the Virgin Mary without any stain. It was established as a bank holiday by Pope Clemente XI in 1708.
Holidays last until the 6th of January, day of Epiphany, which commemorates the visitation of the Biblical Magi to the Baby Jesus. It is also called feast of the Befana, especially among the young, since in Italian folklore the Befana is an old woman who hands out gifts to children, mostly sweets.

GETTING AROUND ROME
During Christmas festivities, streets sparkle with plenty of glistening festive lights everywhere in the city. Shoppers, both locals and tourists, flock in the most central areas of the city to buy their Christmas gifts and souvenirs and groups of musicians, sometimes dressed as Santa Clause, enliven the atmosphere playing traditional Christmas songs.
In this period streets get very crowded at almost every time of the day, and sometimes traffic can be annoying, but it is always well worth going for a stroll along Via del Corso or about the elegant boutiques of Spanish Steps!

Several Christmas trees are erected in Rome in early December, and stays for about a month. Two of the largest Christmas trees are placed in Piazza Venezia, in front of the Vittoriano, and before the Colosseum, symbol of the Eternal city. Nativity scenes, called Presepio in Italian, are set up in all the major churches of Rome during Christmas days. The most famous and impressive one is the life-size crib located in Saint Peter’s square. Every year, it takes several weeks to arrange it, so preparations begin far before Christmas holidays start.
The nativity scene in Saint Peter’s square is traditionally unveiled on Christmas’ Eve. At midnight, the Pope says mass to thousands of faithful, while on the following day, the Christmas Day, he delivers his message to an even larger crowd, from the window of his apartment overlooking Saint Peter’s square.
The other three patriarchal Basilicas of Rome, that are Santa Maria Maggiore, San Giovanni in Laterano, and San Paolo Fuori Le Mura also host large cribs arranged with attention to the finest details.

Enrico Del Debbio, Italian architect and university professor, worked on the project on commission of the government. The Stadium was conceived to host competitions of various athletic disciplines and was inaugurated in 1932.

As it can be inferred by its name, the distinctive feature of the Stadium of the Marbles are the 59 Carrara marble statues in the classical style, that portray athletes. The statues are placed over a flight of steps 5 metres high all around the playing field. The Stadium has a seating capacity of 5.280 people.
