Estate Romana

From June to September the major squares, parks and streets in Rome are enlivend by a number of summer events: from stage shows to music concerts (rock, classical and jazz), children’s fun and many others.

In fact, the Estate Romana includes many different initiatives: they all take place in the open air and offer locals and tourists alike the chance to spend many enjoyable nights in Rome without spending a fortune. The most interesting events of the Estate Romana are the Isola del Cinema (Cinema Island) in the enchanting setting of the Tiber island, where film screens are set up and show mainstream and cult movies every nights. There are also many stalls along the sides of the island, and several kiosks where to have a drink chatting with friends.

Men’s Volleyball World Championship in Rome

Expectation is growing for one of the most significant sport events of the year: the 2010 Men’s Volleyball World Championship in Rome.

The event will be held in Italy from the 25th of September to the 10th of October, in 10 different cities: Milan, Verona. Modena, Reggio Calabria, Torino, Trieste, Catania, Ancona, Florence and Rome.

In particular, Rome will host the semi final and final matches on the 9th and 10th of October in the Palalottomatica arena, which has a seating capacity of 11200 spectators.

24 teams, arranged in 6 groups, will participate to the tournament for a total of 78 matches. Tickets are already on sale and prices start from 10 € to 50 €. For more information see the Official site, where the complete schedule has been published.

In an interwiev Francesco Ghirelli, chief exectuive officer of the organizing committe, Carlo Magri, president of the Italian volleybal federation and Carlo Salvatori, president of the organizing committee, pointed out the importance of this event, which confirms Italy a major country in the organization of sport events.

In many years we have seen hundreds of tourists, both foreign or Italian people, coming to Rome and get a little puzzled by this huge city. There are so many things to see and do, and everything is bigger, faster, and sometimes more complicated than it would be in other cities.

Rome Walking Tour

Here are some tips to take a fun Rome Walking Tour: start your tour from Piazza Venezia, at the end of Via del Corso, and admire the towering monument of Vittoriano, dedicated to the first king of Italy Victor Emmanuel II. The monument, built from 1911 and 1935, is also called Altar of the Fatherland.

Behind the Vittoriano is the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Altar of Heavens, with its long staircase. Italian famous football player Francesco Totti and his wife Ilary Blasi chose this church for their wedding. Next to the church is the Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo. Three palaces overlook the square and houses the Capitoline Museums, if you want to visit them keep in mind the opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday 9.00 a.m – 8.00 p.m.

End your Rome walking tour strolling along Via dei Fori Imperiali, where finally you will reach the Colosseum, the most impressive monument in the city and symbol of the ancient grandeur of the capital of Roman Empire.

Rome Vatican Tour

Once you have decided to spend some time in Rome, you can’t really miss a tour in the smallest city-state in the world: the Vatican city.

Located within the city of Rome, near Castel Sant Angelo (Mausoleum of Hadrian), the Vatican city was established in 1929 as an independent state. It is ruled by the Pope, who also has his residence here.
You may start your Vatican tour from Saint Peter square, the very heart of the Vatican city. The present layout of the square was designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini from 1656 to 1667. Have a walk under the majestic colonnades in the Doric style, having the shape of a huge embrace, and reach the obelisk in the centre of the square.

The impressive Dome of the Basilica, conceived by Michelangelo, will certainly have captured your attention, and once you get before it, be sure its sumptuous beauty will take your breath away. Enter the Basilica and admire the interior: beneath the dome is the baldachin by Bernini, the largest piece of bronze ever built, while the most important sculpture is La Pietà, depicting Jesus on the lap of Mary, an authentic masterpiece by Michelangelo.

Complete your Vatican tour at the Vatican Museums, among the largest and most popular museums across the globe, which contain a superb collection of artworks built up by the Catholic Church over the centuries.

De Chirico Exhibition in Rome

Italian painter Giorgio De Chirico founded the Metaphysical Art Movement one hundred years ago, and today Rome celebrate the anniversary with an exhibition in his honour.

At the beginning of the 19th century, De Chirico developed his original style focusing on the architecture of mediterranean cities, which he painted in an unrealistic perspective characterized by the absence of human beings.
The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon and The Enigma of the Oracle are among his earliest and most significant artworks.
As it can be gathered from the title, “Nature according the Chirico” focuses on the concept of nature from De Chirico point of view, and aims to represent the many ways he conceived and transfigured nature, whether in visionary urban landscapes or fixed geometric mannequins.

On display are over 120 paintings, on loan from major public and private museums across the globe. They have been carefully selected and arranged in seven theme-based itineraries.
The exhibition is curated by art critic Achille Bonito Oliva, and will run until the 11th of July, at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome.
