Enrico Del Debbio, Italian architect and university professor, worked on the project on commission of the government. The Stadium was conceived to host competitions of various athletic disciplines and was inaugurated in 1932.

As it can be inferred by its name, the distinctive feature of the Stadium of the Marbles are the 59 Carrara marble statues in the classical style, that portray athletes. The statues are placed over a flight of steps 5 metres high all around the playing field. The Stadium has a seating capacity of 5.280 people.
Also the Olympic Stadium of Rome is included in the Foro Italico complex, adjoining the Stadium of the Marbles.
